Cortisol is a double-edged sword. We need it to adapt to stress but when levels remain too high, cortisol causes brain fog and suppresses the immune system. Over the long term, elevated cortisol levels lead to serious health problems.
When we experience stress, our body releases hormones known as adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) which triggers the adrenal cortex to produce cortisol (also called hydrocortisone).
Cortisol increases energy (mobilizing free fatty acids) decreases glucose metabolism (sparing for essential brain functions), stimulates protein catabolism breakdown and converting fats and proteins into glucose (for repair and energy).
Cortisol was sold as a wonder-drug for arthritis in the 1950s because of it's short-term antiinflammatory properties. Unfortunately though, too much cortisol severely depresses immune reactions. High levels of cortisol are shown to cause hypertension, poor wound healing, bone loss, muscle wasting, thin skin, increased abdominal fat, insulin resistance and insomnia, all of which are common in older persons.
A German study found daily cortisol production levels were 54% higher in a group of senior men (over 70 years old) as compared to a group young men (ages 21-30), all of whom were otherwise healthy. (R5)
A four-year longitudinal study found a significant relationship between increasing cortisol levels and the impairment of memory and selective attention performance in otherwise healthy persons. Studies also show that cortisol levels are directly related to the degree of cognitive impairment in people with Alzheimer's disease. (R1,R2,R3,R4)
Cortisol affects mood and behavior and disrupts memory and recall. Research shows cortisol has significant interactions with the neurotransmitters, neuropeptides, and brain circuits that are associated with depressive symptoms. (R2)
In healthy persons under stress, cortisol levels are found as high as 500%. But when someone has a depressive disorder, cortisol levels go up even more and considerable evidence suggests elevated cortisol is involved in the pathogenesis of depressive disorders. (R2)
Both physical and mental stress cause cortisol to be released into circulation, even in the young and healthy.
